Design Engineer from Switzerland. I still open a new app and notice the spacing before anything else. Caring about that, and being able to build it myself, turned out to be the whole job.

A bit about meWhat keeps me at it

What I love about this work is the moment an interface stops being a plan and starts being a thing you can use. Because I both design and code it, that moment comes on day one, not somewhere near the end.

Twenty years of it has made me fond of the parts nobody notices until they are missing: spacing that holds, a layout that survives a very long word, focus states that actually exist. Nobody thanks you for those. They are still the best part.

Lately I build a lot with Claude Code. It changes how fast an idea turns into something you can hold. That is the part I have always cared about.

Mac app design and build

I have never been able to concentrate on one thing for long. Not for lack of interest. I would sit down, start, drift off, and an hour later have little to show for it.

The Pomodoro technique was the first thing that changed that, because it takes the decision away from me. What the existing timers were missing was the part that actually protects a session. So Tomatino turns on a Focus mode and starts the music by itself, and puts both back when the break begins.

Swiss invoicing software for the Mac: quotes, QR invoices, VAT statements. I designed the site and built it, in German, English and French, because a Swiss product does not get to pick one.
